Sony Sensors are nice and recovering shadows is an important asset, it is very useful. Canon lacks in that area. However, one must remember that if Nikon is not making its own sensors and is buying them from Sony, then Nikon has lost a key ingredient to the competition, even if the sensor performance is better. Nikon is then dependent on how or what Sony offers or some other third party at best. While Canon makes its own sensors which is important to control if a company does not want to surrender an important component to a competitor. On the whole neither Nikon nor Canon are doing enough innovation. However, among the three in photography for stills Canon is financially more sound, Nikon far less so, and Sony is subsidized by its insurance unit which is a cash cow allowing them to toss money at R&D without a sufficient return and attempting to gain market share. Sony has a tendency to abandon things and move on and can be pricey. Nikon as well can be pricey too. In fact given the exchange rate these days all Japanese camera equipment is a good 25% or more overpriced. Canon and Nikon need to innovate and develop mirrorless type cameras because the days of DSLR cameras without having some kind of EVF and a fold out touch screen are limited. Canon has done nothing interesting since the original 5D and the markii follow-up. They don’t offer 4K on a DSLR and frankly their lenses are getting stale and Sigma has better priced as-good-as or better lenses in the Art series they are offering these days. They are going to Kodak themselves right into oblivion if they keep things up.

I hate it when Nikon and canon users tear lumps out of each other, they both have thier pros and cons, To be honest if shadow recovery is the only think that people are worried about, they are not been creative enough when taking the shot!, the use of filters, correct exposure, and post work all come into play. I have a 6d , and i hardly ever have to blend images, if i use the histogram, and expose to the right, the shadows are easily recoverable. Yes the sony sensor has more dynamic range, but canons lens line up is much more comprehensive than mikon. I will tell you this though, ive recently started shooting wildlife, and i was in a hide the other day with about 8 other togs, the split was 50-50 nikon and canon, the canon guys were drooling over the 7d mk2, and the nikon guys were talking of buying into canon because nikon did not have a camera to match the 7dmk2 at the same price!!!, this camera was built for sports and wildlife, and at that it excells. But if you want to take landscapes, then thats a different matter, the nikon cameras have a slight edge!!!!

I’ve watching every video I could find to decide on which camera to get. I’m definitely buying Canon 7D Mark 11 with 55 – 250 f/4 – 5.6 IS STM lens. This lens comes highly recommended. But for Standard Prime Lens, I’m not clear which would be the best. Can you recommend something good, better than 18 -55 lens, Alan? Thanks.
