I run a small business from home and bought the officejetPro x476DW on first release in Spring 2013. I also bought the additional paper tray but had to wait until that came out a little later. I was attracted by the print speed and the large ink and media capacities but mostly because print cartridges for my Dell colour laser were just getting to the absolutely ludicrous stage.
I was very, very pleased with the printer. It was easy to set up on my network, hardwired via Ethernet and the print quality was good as very all the other functions including fax and scanning. The latter was easy to set up unlike the previous Dell which required an honours degree in programming!
All went well until earlier this year, about a month after it was out of warranty, it came up with a “print head” error. HP’s support was absolutely hopeless but eventually they offered to repair it but the cost of repair plus guaranteeing there repair for a year came to £20 less than a brand new replacement with a two year warranty.
I was fuming and would not have bought another HP product save for the fact that I had stocks of expensive HP cartridges and the additional paper tray all of which would have to be written off.
The new printer works flawlessly but I am left with a sour taste that a top end printer should only last just over two years and, of course, I worry that this one will go the same way!

I am a Realtor and had worn out my old Brother Laser multi-function machine. After careful consideration, I purchased the HP Officejet Pro 476dw MFP. For the first six months during my second busiest year in real estate, about every third time I tried to use it, it would lose its connection with my computer, so I would have to run the Print and Scan Doctor, it would say it was repaired and I would have to restart the computer, which would mean re-opening all the documents I was working on. Finally last week, I had time to call customer service and they were very good at solving that issue. The remedy was to manually input the IP address of the printer on the computer so it wouldn’t automatically reassign a new address and cause it to lose connection. It seems to me that HP should have put those instructions in big, bold print since it is a fairly common problem with this particular model. My Brother never had that problem. Now I just experienced another problem for which there is no simple answer. I want to scan, so I try opening the console the logo of which is in my taskbar. It wants me to set up the printer again each time and when I try to, it gives an error message. But the printer still prints from my computer! And now still another problem– strike three. I printed labels– fourteen damn pages. I told it to use the Manual Feed Tray 1. It used Tray 2 and wasted 14 pages. I thought I made a mistake, so I tried again. Wasted another 14 pages! I tried again and instead of telling it Manual Feed Tray 1, I selected just Tray 1. (Why they have Tray 1 labelled twice I’ll never know) and this time it worked, but only after wasting 28 pages of paper! This sucker is going back to Staples. Poor job, HP!
