So how does the picture compare to a decent tv? I have a 2009 Panasonic plasma: should I get rid of it and replace it with this, or is the picture quality going to be noticeably worse. Some benchmarking against other types of kit would be really helpful

Whilst I haven’t viewed this device myself, I can assure you that your Panny will display better picture quality than almost any projector under £10k.
This device is about the size and more importantly, form factor.

I noticed that on the back there is a cover that can easely be removed, without screws.
Under this cover there is a slot into which I could plug a wifi card, but I don’t know which WIFI card to plugin, can somone take a picture or send me the WIFI card model?
