The XA50 is an entry-level professional camera. As such, it has professional/semi-professional features, which include built-in ND filters, a focus/zoom ring, XLR ports, “fine adjust” zoom lever switch, audio channel adjustments, and dual-pixel focusing (sophisticated focusing system). In case you’re wondering the XA50 and XA55 are exactly the same except that the XA55 comes with an SDI port, which gives you more flexibility when it comes to output options. The XA50 is a lot like my XF400 (a higher level camera). The most significant difference, at least that I am aware of, is that the XF400 can shoot 4K 60p instead 4K 30p, and the XF400 display covers a larger area than the XA50. But otherwise, all the features of the XA50 are very close if not exactly the same. The price difference as of this writing, is about $300. So, it’s almost like paying $300 more for 60p and a larger display. The truth is, although I always shoot in 60p if the camera allows it, I haven’t come across a situation where I felt I needed it – not yet.The $300 difference seems reasonable for a larger display and 60p. But the XA50 came out later, so it may have some technological advances that didn’t make it into the XF400. That’s pure speculation on my part. This camera is more for enthusiasts and professionals. Enthusiasts can learn and grow, and professionals can use this entry-level pro camera as a second or third, more expendable camera. If you’re an established professional, you don’t need to read this review. There is so much to know when it comes to features and specifications. If you want to go in depth, I highly recommend that you view the product information at the Canon website and/or download and read the manual.Let me tell you what I especially like. The focusing system uses Canon’s latest technology – dual pixel. I can’t explain the technology. All I know is that it is their most sophisticated at this writing. I do know that when focusing manually, it can tell you at a glance, not just that you are out of focus, but whether your point of focus is behind or in front of the subject. That allows you to adjust accordingly instead of hunting. This feature is useful for rack focusing, which means to intentionally shift the focus to draw the viewer’s attention to something specific. The XA50 has a larger sensor for cameras this size – a 1 inch. This allows better results in low light conditions and produces more pronounced bokeh (background blur) than smaller sensors like the one in the XA40. The XA50 also has one more iris blade than the XA40, 9 instead of 8. More iris blades tend to produce nicer circles of confusion (blurry circles of light in the background). Larger sensors tend to have lower optical zoom power than smaller sensor cameras. The XA50 has a 15x zoom compared to the 20x zoom on the XA40, which has a 1/2.3 inch sensor. But 15x is plenty.I like the handle, which comes with a fine-adjust zoom switch, on/off record switch, audio adjustment dials, XLR ports, and a nice shock mount for a shotgun microphone. Basically, any Canon camcorder with this type of handle is in the professional category. It’s a small thing, but I have the lens hood on full time. That’s because it comes with an open/close door that is controlled by a manual switch. It’s bulkier, but much easier to work with than a lens cap, which of course, also comes with the camera. The tiltable viewfinder is nice and par for the course on a pro camera. The eye cup is comfortable and I like that neither the door, nor the viewfinder turns the camera on/off like my consumer class Sony AX53. That is how it should be.The wide gamma curve, which allows for a wide dynamic range is nice to have. But higher grade cameras come with log format recording capability for even more flexibility in post. The fact that the XA50 (and XF400) don’t have log format ability is not a drawback. Not having it means you pay a lower price, which is great if you don’t need it.The XA50 is a small (relatively speaking) and highly capable camera. One day I will make serious movies, but for now, I need to shoot with the higher mobility and versatility (don’t have to change lenses) that this type of camera affords.I am very pleased with the form and function, and fit and finish.

This is an amazing video camera! It has two SD card slots built-in so you can choose to fill one and then move to the other automatically or use them both at the same time. There is a built-in microphone that works well, but it also has inputs for either a shotgun microphone or other audio inputs that have individual volume controls. It has infrared so you can get low-light shots that look clear, but when you use it for full-color video it blows others away. The videos are amazing. It also includes a remote control that you can use to control many aspects of the video shoot, though it is a line-of-sight remote, meaning you can’t leave it at your side and push the buttons, you have to be pointing it directly at the camera. You will most definitely want to get a case to protect this as soon as possible. It is compact enough to go just about anywhere, so finding a case for it won’t be hard. The battery life is very good. The camera attaches to any stand with just a standard camera mount. The beauty of this 4k quality video is that you can get a fairly wide shot and still manage to zoom in on it later in your editing software and not have the image be pixelated. To me, this is the perfect camera for any budding director looking to create videos or movies that are high-quality.

What I love about this camera is that it gives you big budget results without costing a true fortune. Don’t get me wrong, over 2K isn’t cheap, but you can make some incredible videos with this machine. It gives you XLR options with the audio, I use a wireless lapel mic most of the time and it handles that perfectly. But if I want to take it outside and get location footage, it provides beautiful footage. In the studio it is painless and has facial recognition to make focusing simple. That versatility makes it possible to integrate all different kinds of ideas that break you out of the studio only mode.Dual SD slots also provide flexibility. You can record to one then the other or both at the same time. This machine mounts on all standard equipment and is light and easy to handle. You will have to buy some sort of carrying case though. It has low light control, even infrared. It records in true 4K, has a mini-HDMI output and can accommodate a range of audio options.Simply put, if you want to shoot high quality video, but don’t want to go into debt to do so, this is a great option.

I don’t know whether to write a 10-page review of everything this camera can do or to write a one-page overview and then tell you what I like and don’t like about this camera. Let me just add that the Amazon description simply does not do the Canon XA55 justice. Now, why did I call it the XA55 when the title shows XÁ50? Simply put, Amazon sent me the XA55 instead of the XA50. In price, it is a $500 difference but that difference will be used only by Pros and then only by a select few Professionals who use video recorders or camcorders. That difference will be in my review marked by *****.If this were described as a Canon camcorder for home users, it would be the highest end camcorder made anywhere because of what it can do. As it is labeled a Pro camcorder, let’s just say it’s more of a Pro camcorder than its counterpart, the XA50 because of that one $500 addition I mentioned in the previous paragraph. But, as a Pro camcorder, it is definitely on the low end—price wise, that is. This does not make it cheap and bad, only because the cost of a true Pro camcorder by Canon and other manufacturers can go as high as $45-$50K. And similar to the camcorder is the digital cine camera, these can range from $18K to nearly $100K.All prices in all lines of camcorders and digital cine cameras and exclusive of extra lenses, filters, digital cards, card readers, cables, lights, etc. Those will add even more cost to the product. But, in reviewing the XF55 by Cannon, I revert back to it and must admit that even for a Pro such as one taking videos at a wedding, or an anniversary party, a birthday party, a college reunion, or any similar event—but in the hands of a pro—this camcorder is an absolute delight.Like the lesser Canon camcorders that are for home use by members of the family taking videos of a vacation, or children and grandchildren growing up, etc. it is probably more than what you would need in a camcorder UNLESS he or she has a love of photography and simply wants the best in the camcorder purchased. It will undoubtedly last a long time with white-glove care such as not leaving it in the car in 100°+ heat for hours on end or letting every Tom, Dick and Harry play with it.It’s easy to shoot videos after installing all the parts, charging the included battery pack and opening up the luscious LCD screen (more on that later). Just set to auto and hit the record button When finished shooting, hit the record button again. That stops the recording The camcorder will make all the settings it’s processor believes to be correct and in 95 percent of the time shooting outdoors, your videos will be as you would like. Easy as pressing a button. And from my experience of talking to many friends (non-pros) who have camcorders, that’s exactly how they shoot videos. But, this XA55 can do much more—a lot more if you desire it to do so. So let’s delve into these additional actions it can do and why it cost $2699 rather than $399.00Let’s first see what you get in the box:• Compact Power Adapter and Power Cord•. Ferrite Core•. Battery Pack•. Handle Unit•. Microphone Holder Unit (microphone not included)•. Lens Hood and Barrier•. Lens Cap•. Wireless Controller with Battery (Remote Control for Camcorder)•. Quick Guide (Brief overview to get started)What you will still need to purchase, in my opinion, to use the camcorder in any event and for long shooting periods (4+ hours)•. 58mm UV Filter to place on top of the stationery lens mounted to the camcorder. This will not only protect the lens from scratches and other mishaps, but will also keep out unwanted UV rays. This is a must for any camera where filters can be added. FYI, this XR55 has a built-in ND filter (Neutral Density) filter so there’s a nice money saver. A German glass UV filter will run you about $50 or so.•. The XA55 has a dual card slot for recording your videos or photos to. Depending on the quality of the shoot (720p, 1080i, to 4K HDR, takes a lot of space and I would recommend purchasing two 128 GB cards at the least, or two-256 GB cards. You can go all out and purchase two-512 GB cards as well which will give you the best value for your money, but that is where you start running into a little extra money. However, you shouldn’t buy any card. It will take SD and SDHC cards; however, one really needs to buy SDXC cards, and they should be Class 10 for best speed. Class 10 signifies a different bus (a method of interfacing with the hardware) allowing for a new class of cards with a write speed of up to 30 MB/s sustained speed. This type of card is optimized for 4K video. Next, be sure the SDXC card has a U3 rating. This is another rating class for speed. For 4K video, I would highly recommend that your card be a recognizable brand name (one of three) and the write speed on this card should be 170 Mb/sec. There is a newer version of this card for sale that has a speed of 300 Mb/sec. but at this time has a maximum size of 128 GB and one card costs nearly $200. Very expensive for two of these cards and overkill unless you are a true Pro videographer. The XA55 has two card slots and can be used in two different methods. The dual method records on both cards at the same time. This gives you a backup on one card to what was recorded on the other. The other method is called the Relay recording method and nothing is recorded on Card #2 in slot #2 until the first card is filled and then the camcorder automatically starts recording on the second card. I personally have not tried this Relay process, but according to Canon, it records is such a way that there is absolutely no recording gap when moving from one card to the next. So, you lose nothing that was recorded.•. You will need to purchase a card reader that can read SDXC cards with an exceptional data transfer rate (300-500MB/ sec. These readers now come with USB-C connectors for faster transfer rates if your computer or tablet has a USB-C port.• The XR55, according to Canon can take either the BP820 or BP828 Battery Pack for power. It comes packed with the BP820 which should give you anywhere from 2-4 hours of shooting time when fully charged. The BP28 adds an extra hour or so to that. When I was shooting my test run, I was able to shoot in 720p for 3.95 hours and in 4K just a little over two hours. To accomplish these times, be sure that you fully charge the battery pack overnight before its first use. These are Li Ion batteries and you cannot overcharge them. Then, in the opinion of many if not most battery experts, it’s best to drain the battery packs at least once every month or so and then recharge them overnight to retain good health and a long life expectancy.• I also recommend that you purchase a second battery pack as a backup. I know of no person who owns a camcorder that does not own two or more battery packs. As a warning, be careful if you purchase non-Canon brand battery packs. They could do more damage to the camcorder in the long run. They may appear to work well but the damage might be slow in coming, especially after the warranty has past.• If you plan to record people speaking directly to you, I would suggest you purchase an external microphone to fit in the included holder. The XR55 accommodates microphones with 2 channels of input and there are input outlets for these cables. Again, these cables are not included in the box. But, there is a built-in microphone that is pretty decent and it will pick up sounds and voices but it’s not satisfactory, for example, a ono-on-one interview with another person. On the other hand, if you are recording a birthday party and simply want to record the noise and people talking, the built- in mic is highly sufficient. These are the items I consider a MUST or SHOULD purchase in order to use the XR55 in its proper manner. They are either an absolute must or very highly recommended. But even if only highly recommended, it’s best to buy them as soon as possible. You are protecting a fairly sizable investment. The XR55, as I briefly stated, also takes photos. Still photos. There is a setting for Photos separate from Videos toaccommodate this. Here is where I could go into an in-depth discussion of every tiny setting one can make to customize your photos and videos and discuss each one and how to perform the task—but this is all set out in a 145+ page Operations Manual that is found online at usa.canon.com. I found it best to print this huge document out on my Laser printer to read it as I needed to learn how to make each setting.Virtually every setting is menu driven on the pull-out LCD screen that has luscious color, is very bright whose brightness can be adjusted for viewing indoors or outside and tilts 90° to accommodate your angle of viewing. All settings, if not set by hitting a button, will be set on a menu found in the LCD panel. To use this panel, the instructions are quite detailed and to do so takes much practice and memorization to get to the appropriate menu quickly to create a desired setting if you can’t push a button on the camcorder to accomplish the same setting. These settings and how to accomplish them are described in great detail in the Operation Manual which, as stated above, can be found on Canon USA’s website.*****Now, why does this camera cost an extra $500 more than the XA50 which is otherwise a twin to the XA50? There is a port on the right side of the camera called an SDI port that looks like your home cable coax connection. Here, one can connect a cable to this port (output only) and feed live video directly to a gathering source like a news truck or a computer nearby which can then send it to a nearby, on-site news truck (local or national news) for a live newscast or for airing at a later time. The process is know as Electronic News Gathering or more commonly known in the field as ENG. Now you will understand why this port may be of interest only to news crews or news hounds for various reasons. Otherwise, the Canon XA50 is the same camcorder without this port. But, why would you want to purchase this high-end of a camcorder? For the higher quality lens. This lens is a 4K video lens that zooms from an amazing 8.3mm to 124mm, and aperture of 2.8 to 4.5, and a screw-on typ filter—58mm in size. The XR55 is very lightweight at 2.8 pounds. The handle unit (included) that you must screw onto the camcorder has a duplicate record button, a record lock key, and additionally has the two ports for the two-channel microphone, and volume controls for the two channels as well as other ‘audio in’ control. It has a cold shoe for a light used in low-light situations. This is needed because the handle unit used the cold shoe on the camera itself. Even with the Battery Pack BP820, the weight varies by an ounce at most. It’s very, very small. The bottom line is that in automatic, the XA55 is as easy to use as any other Canon camcorder, but as the saying goes, ‘You get what you pay for.’ And with this camcorder, you get a whole lot. Use all the various settings, as you would a high-end SLR or mirrorless 35mm or compact camera.• Change from Auto Focus to Manual Focus using the Focus Ring• Adjust White Balance• Turn on or off the Image Stabilization• Choose shooting exposure from AE, Tv or Av.—Programmed, Shutter Priority and Aperture Priority• Use your own headphones with the headphone jack• Shoot/record in Infrared• Set any one of five (5) programmable buttons as you would like them to be• Connect to an external monitor• Record and otherwise operate the XA55 with the wireless controller• and 25+ more I could list. The videos and photos I shot in slo-mo and regular speed are unbelievably sharp, without any noise noticeable to the naked eye, and stunningly beautiful. Items shot with multiple bright colors were not over-saturated and the colors did not bleed into each other. From a distance, the videos looked as if one of the major studios shot the movies in 4K which played back beautifully on my 4K monitor.I am still learning all the menu settings. It takes a lot of time to master them, but a short time to learn how to set them. The LCD panel is large and easy to use. The brightness level can be changed to suit your viewing preference. There are many tiers to the settings as there are on any pro model camera or camcorder. After unpacking, putting all the included parts together (which was very easy and quick to do), and reading first the Quick Start guide which is included in the box, I shot my first set of videos—all automatic. Then, I started to read the Instruction Manual after printing it. I read certain sections so I could shoot as many pictures and videos as I could for this review and now I am going back to read it thoroughly for a detailed review to learn each and every setting I believe I will use. There is without a doubt more features that I will use such as the ENG that I discussed earlier. There are even some settings I will never bother with on a regular basis, but will try to see the outcome of each.Going through this type of training with the Manual is the only way to learn to use this level of camcorder just as it was with my three 35mm EOS cameras I owned before I retired. The XR55 and its counterpart, the XR50 are superb Pro-level camcorders that have a lot to offer the user and the results when set to automatic or manual, are superbly beautiful and whether in UHD or 4K, the pictures (photos and video clips) are unbelievable. It makes me look like a pro when I am far from it.I highly recommend this for anyone interested in a high-end consumer camcorder or Pro camcorder for a great price for what Canon gives you back. You want go wrong. You can’t go wrong. And who wants to end up with bad videos taken at some special event when using the XR55 guarantees an outstanding result with just a little practice first!

Canon XA50 Professional Camcorder clocks in a a very slim 3.6″ wide and a little over 10 inches long with the boom connected and 2.1 pounds which I thinks works for the video in addition to the 5 axis image stabilization. It allows for smooth panning when gathering video for a local fair. In short I don’t feel the weight will be much of an issue when most of our sessions will be under 30 minutes and usually less.Let’s take a look at the many features that I feel are the most used. The 15X zoom easily covers the tighter urban bike rides. And you have dual XLR audio inputs meaning you don’t have to lug around extra weight from the audio equipment. I needed a video camera that could capture trail rides but when Canon sent the XA50 I was overwhelmed by its many controls that are integrated and only accessible through the 3″ TFT screen. Look directly above the screen to the right and you will see ND. This has integrated ND filters that offers more content. By that I mean that some “scenes” were riding a trail next to a pond and the noonday reflections were too much but a couple presses of a button and I could choose which looked the best and THAT CAN BE CHANGED ON THE FLY! Transitioning from a heavily forested trail out into a sun filled meadow can bring some shots to their knees. A simple filter change saves time.3840 x 2160 Brings in so much more information than the old 1080p and allows for a richer end product. But what the heck is dual-pixel control. I could offer you the dry definition but it essentially allows for better autofocus which when your constantly moving is a literal godsend. Manually trying to keep up isn’t fun sometimes. For me it’s like it doesn’t get tunnel vision if that makes sense. So you have a 4k 28p auto-focused and stabilized recording that is being fed through an ND filter with audio being recorded at the same time. It accepts SDXC cards which I use and when I turn the camera off I don’t have to reteach it when it wakes up. Menu settings are stored as well. I’m still learning so finding settings is sorta hard with this unit. It remembering is also a godsend. This makes this very amateur filmmaker in training a very happy boy who remembers the 80’s and the camcorders they had back then. Post production times are literally halved and more. It provides the user with auto-pilot if they need it but other view modes offer greater flexibility.I’ve heard complaints about the camera’s inability to record slow enough for some styles of shooting. This camcorder I think is aimed at documentaries and local reporting and of course many YouTubers but it isn’t a cinematic camcorder made for the dramatic but for my needs I didn’t feel limited by that feature at all. Like the lack of an SDI connection which I don’t need. For those that need real time exporting of their digital media that would be an important feature. I don’t do live remotes or ever have a need for that.Speaking of Youtubers there are many spend most of their time outdoors. You have the battery pack(BP-820) that easily fulfills my needs. The vloggers will appreciate this, what I call, an all in one video and audio package. The XLR microphone is NOT included so you do have to provide that. Seeing as everybody has their own flavor of sound they like I think it would have been overkill.Do I recommend Canon XA50 Professional Camcorder? That’s not an easy one. While this does fulfill my needs they are still very green but the more I learn about this camcorder the more value it will contain. Yes, I do recommend this camcorder.

So, this gal is fantastic. She’s the flagship of the XA series (at the time of writing), and features a 1″ sensor, while her lesser siblings feature a 3/4ths inch. I have uploaded some test footage with this review of a stormy day in So Cal. I think the footage looks fantastic, please excuse my poor handling of the camera.I also took some footage of a rainy night with *zero* light, and it was fantastic. Sadly, Amazon only allows one video per review, so I’ve chosen the daylight video. My only gripe is, I wish we could somehow get a higher bitrate MP4 out of it. I know that would require reworking the SD card interface, but I think that would be worth it.So what we have here is a low-end professional camera, but by low-end professional, I mean, something that far exceeds consumer products. I couldn’t be happier with this camera– I’m using it as the primary camera to shoot a YouTube series. If you have the means and the need– this is a fantastic camera.
